10 LPG Safety Tips Every Kenyan Home Should Follow
PataGas Kenya · 22 October 2026

Cooking gas is safe when handled right. From leak checks to proper storage, these are the ten rules our certified technicians teach on every installation visit in Nairobi.
LPG is the cleanest, fastest way to cook — and it's remarkably safe when you follow the basics. These are the ten rules our technicians demonstrate on every cooker installation visit.
1. Smell gas? Don't touch switches
LPG is odourised to smell like rotten eggs. If you smell it: no lights, no flames, no phone calls inside. Open windows, close the cylinder valve, and step outside.
2. The soap-water leak test
Brush soapy water over the valve, regulator and hose connections. Bubbles = a leak. Tighten or replace — never tape over it.
3. Keep the cylinder upright, always
Cylinders are designed upright. A cylinder on its side or upside-down can feed liquid gas to the burner — a serious hazard.
4. Change your hose pipe regularly
Rubber hoses perish. Replace yours at least every two years, or immediately if you see cracks, stiffness or bite marks (yes, rats chew hoses). Find genuine regulators, hoses and accessories in our catalogue.
5. Ventilate the kitchen
Gas needs oxygen to burn cleanly and a path for fumes to escape. Never cook in a fully sealed room.
6. Don't store cylinders in direct sun or near heat
Keep cylinders away from the cooker flame, water heaters and direct sunlight. Heat raises internal pressure.
7. Turn off at the valve when done
Cooker knobs off, then cylinder valve off. Two seconds, every night.
8. Never try to refill or transfer gas yourself
Decanting between cylinders in open air is how explosions happen. It's also illegal. Exchanges belong at licensed plants — which is why every PataGas refill is factory-filled and sealed.
9. Keep children away from the cylinder
No playing near it, no hanging things on it, no rolling it.
10. Service your cooker yearly
Blocked jets and worn regulators waste gas and leak. Book our home safety inspection or cooker service — our technician comes to you.
