6kg vs 13kg vs 50kg: Which Gas Cylinder Size Does Your Home Need?

Walk into any gas shop in Kenya and the first question is always the same: unataka ya kukaa ngapi? The right cylinder size saves you money and spares you mid-cooking emergencies. Here's the honest breakdown.

The 6kg — the small-household workhorse

Perfect for bedsitters, students, couples and light cooking. A 6kg refill lasts a small household roughly 4–6 weeks of daily breakfast-and-dinner use. It's light enough to carry, fits under most counters, and the refill is the cheapest way to keep cooking. If you cook once or twice a day and don't bake, start here.

The 13kg — the family standard

The most popular size in Kenya, and for good reason. A 13kg refill keeps a family of four cooking two to three meals daily for about two months. It powers full-size cookers, handles guests without panic, and offers the best cost-per-kg for home use. When in doubt, Nairobi families choose 13kg.

The 50kg — for serious kitchens

Restaurants, hotels, schools, bakeries and caterers: the 50kg cylinder is your unit. High capacity, fewest changeovers, and the lowest refill cost per kilogramme. Pair it with our professional installation service — a 50kg setup with proper manifold and regulator is not a DIY job.

New to gas? Start with a complete kit

A "refill" price assumes you already own a cylinder to exchange. First-timers should order a new cylinder kit — cylinder, regulator and hose pipe included, safety-checked and delivered ready to connect.

Quick rule of thumb

• 1–2 people, light cooking → 6kg
• Family of 3–6, daily cooking → 13kg
• Business / commercial kitchen → 50kg
