Online shopping in Kenya: the complete guide for buyers

28 October 2026 · 6 min read

Online shopping in Kenya has split into two worlds: the big marketplaces everyone knows, and thousands of independent shops selling through WhatsApp, Instagram and their own storefronts. This guide covers how it all works — and how to get the best of both.

Where Kenyans actually shop online

  • Marketplaces — Jumia, Kilimall, Jiji: huge catalogues, delivery countrywide, but you pay marketplace prices and deal with anonymous sellers.
  • Independent online shops — Kenyan businesses with their own storefronts, usually reachable on WhatsApp. Often cheaper, more personal, and you can verify who you're buying from.
  • Social sellers — Instagram and TikTok shops. Great finds, highest scam risk; always check for a proper shop link before paying.
  • Local shops and supermarkets — many now take orders online or via WhatsApp and deliver within their town.

Finding shops near you

The Shops in Kenya directory lists tens of thousands of businesses across all 47 counties — browse by county, town or category at shops.co.ke/businesses. Filtered searches like 'supermarkets in Nakuru' or 'salons in Westlands' take you straight to real, local options instead of a national marketplace listing.

How payments work

  • M-PESA — the default. Most shops use a Till number (buy goods) or PayBill. Legit shops show a business number, not a personal line.
  • Card payments — some shops accept Visa/Mastercard online.
  • WhatsApp ordering — pick items on a shop link, checkout sends your order to the seller's WhatsApp, then pay via M-PESA.
  • Cash on delivery — offered by some local shops within their town. The safest option for a first purchase.

Delivery

Within towns expect rider delivery (KSh 100–300) or matatu/pickup points. Countrywide orders ship via courier (G4S, Wells Fargo, Posta, Sendy-style riders) at KSh 250–500. Many shops offer free delivery above a spend threshold — worth asking.

The golden rules

  • Pay a Till or PayBill, not a personal number — business numbers can be traced.
  • Check for a real shop page: prices, location, opening hours, a verified badge.
  • WhatsApp the shop before a big order — real businesses reply.
  • For first orders, start small or choose cash on delivery.
