Shopping in Nairobi: markets, malls and where locals actually shop

28 October 2026 · 6 min read

Nairobi shopping runs the full range — open-air markets where everything is negotiable, air-conditioned malls with international brands, and thousands of neighbourhood shops that now take orders on WhatsApp. Here's how to navigate all of it.

The markets

  • Gikomba — East Africa's biggest second-hand clothes market. Go early (6–8am) for the best bales; everything is negotiable.
  • Kamukunji — kitchenware, hardware and household goods at wholesale prices, near the CBD.
  • Toi Market (Kibera/Adams Arcade edge) — clothes, shoes and household items, cheaper than malls.
  • Maasai Market — crafts, beadwork, kitenge and curios. Rotates between locations (often Village Market, Two Rivers or the CBD on different days). Bargaining expected.
  • City Market (Muindu Mbingu St) — flowers, crafts and curios in the CBD.
  • Kariokor — jewellery, leather and hardware, best for trade prices.

The malls

  • Two Rivers (Ruaka) — East Africa's largest mall; international brands, food court, events.
  • Sarit Centre & Westgate (Westlands) — established mid-high-end shopping.
  • Garden City (Thika Rd), TRM and Nextgen — convenient for Roysambu/Kasarani side.
  • The Hub (Karen) and Village Market (Gigiri) — relaxed, upmarket, good restaurants.
  • CBD staples: Yaya Centre (Kilimani), Junction Mall (Ngong Rd), Prestige and Greenhouse for smaller errands.

Shopping by neighbourhood

Every Nairobi neighbourhood has its own commercial heart — Kilimani and Kileleshwa for boutiques and restaurants, Eastleigh for wholesale fabrics and electronics, Ngong Rd and CBD for everything in between. The Shops in Kenya directory lists businesses neighbourhood by neighbourhood — browse towns like /kilimani, /westlands or /eastleigh to find shops you can actually visit or WhatsApp.

Practical tips

  • In markets, prices are opening offers — counter at roughly half and meet in the middle.
  • Malls are fixed-price; markets are negotiable; online shops are listed-price but delivery is often negotiable.
  • Carry M-PESA everywhere — even market vendors prefer it to cash.
  • Weekday mornings beat weekend afternoons in any market.
