You can start selling on Shops in Kenya without registering anything. But a registered business name unlocks a Lipa na M-PESA Till or PayBill in your shop's name, a business bank account, and instant credibility when customers Google you.
What you need
- Your national ID and KRA PIN
- 2–3 name options (in case your first choice is taken)
- An eCitizen account — free to create at eCitizen.go.ke
- About KSh 950 for name reservation + registration
The steps
- Log in to eCitizen → Business Registration Service → Name Search.
- Submit your preferred names; approval usually takes 1–3 days.
- Once the name is reserved, apply for registration of a sole proprietorship (BN2 form online).
- Pay, wait for approval, and download your Business Registration certificate.
What to do with it
- Take the certificate to Safaricom to get a Till or PayBill in your business name.
- Add the registered name to your shop's About page and receipts — it builds trust.
- File your returns on iTax even before you're profitable — compliance is cheaper than penalties.
Registered name + M-PESA till + a Shops storefront is the full stack of a real Kenyan online business — and the whole setup costs less than a weekend's airtime.
